With the big snowstorm coming our way in New England, now is a good time to make sure you are well prepared for an emergency situation.
Check to see that you have adequate medication reserves- you don’t want to find out tomorrow night that you are down to your last Glipizide pill or that you only have 10 units of insulin in your last pen and your telephone is out of order.
If you use a pump- make sure you have extra batteries and insertion sets.
Glance at your sick day kit: is everything up-to-date? If you are holed up with 4 feet of drifts by your door, you want a working meter- with strips and lancets, a thermometer, ketone strips, plenty of sugar-free beverages, and easy to digest foods, such as juices, regular sodas, oatmeal, crackers, gelatins, (regular and sugar-free), puddings and ice creams.
If you lose electricity make sure your insulin supplies are kept warm enough that they don’t freeze. You should stock up on non-perishables, in case the power does go out. Shop for things like whole grain crackers and bread and cereal (high fiber), peanut or other nut butters (almond, cashew), nuts, canned salmon, crab, sardines canned fruits in their own juice, shelf stable packages of milk (if desired) or evaporated milk, canned low sodium vegetables, and canned beans.
Keep your emergency telephone numbers in a easy to locate place.
